Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker games. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has expanded in popularity so quickly.
Omaha/8 begins like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to each player. A round of wagering ensues in which players can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are given out, this is known as the flop. A further round of betting happens. Once all the players have either called or folded, an additional card is flipped on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering happens and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers must attempt to put together the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where many entrants often get flustered. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to use exactly three cards on the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the best hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same notion in almost all poker games.
A low hand is more difficult, but certainly free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be put together, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the higher hand takes the complete pot.
Although it seems complicated initially, following a few rounds you will be able to pick up on the base nuances of the game with ease. Seeing as you have people wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha hi-low offers an exciting collection of betting options and because you have numerous individuals battling for the high hand, as well as a few shooting for the low hand. If you like a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it is worth your time to compete in Omaha Hi-Lo.
