Omaha Hi/Lo: Basic Summary

[ English ]

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complex but favored poker variations. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant variation, has grown in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha/8 begins like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to each player. A sequence of betting follows where gamblers can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is called the flop. Another sequence of wagering ensues. Once all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, an additional card is flipped on the turn. a further round of betting ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The entrants must attempt to put together the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where many players can get flustered. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player must use precisely 3 cards from the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the best possible hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the same approach in almost every poker game.

The low hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no low hand available, the high hand wins the whole pot.

Although it seems complex at the outset, after a couple of rounds you will be able to pick up on the basic subtleties of play with ease. Since you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha/8 offers an amazing collection of betting choices and owing to the fact that you have many players trying for the high hand, as well as several trying for the low. If you prefer a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to play Omaha High-Low.
