Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complex but favored poker games. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure game, has expanded in acceptance so rapidly.
Omaha 8 or better starts just like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of betting ensues where players can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. One more round of betting ensues. After all the players have in turn called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of wagering follows and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers must attempt to make the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a few players often get baffled. Unlike Holdem, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player has to utilize exactly three cards from the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the strongest hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same approach in nearly all poker games.
A low hand is more difficult, but really opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be put together, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no low hand available, the high hand wins the entire pot.
While it seems complex at the outset, after a few rounds you will be able to get the fundamental nuances of play with ease. Seeing as you have people wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha/8 offers an exciting array of betting options and seeing that you have several individuals shooting for the high, along with many shooting for the low hand.
