Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complicated but favored poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant variation, has grown in popularity so quickly.
Omaha 8 or better starts like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of betting ensues in which players can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is known as the flop. Another round of betting ensues. Once all the gamblers have either called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. Another sequence of wagering follows at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers will need to put together the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where many entrants get baffled. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player has to utilize exactly three cards from the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the strongest hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It is the identical notion in almost every poker game.
The low hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that can be put together, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no low hand presented, the higher hand takes the entire pot.
Although it seems complicated at the outset, after a couple of rounds you will be able to get the basic subtleties of the game with ease. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha 8 or better offers an exciting array of wagering choices and because you have several players trying for the high hand, as well as several shooting for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha/8.
