Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complex but popular poker games. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure variation, has expanded in popularity so rapidly.
Omaha 8 or better begins like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to each player. A round of betting ensues in which gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is known as the flop. Another sequence of betting happens. After all the players have either called or folded, another card is flipped on the turn. a further round of wagering ensues and then the river card is flipped. The entrants must attempt to make the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where some entrants can get confused. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player has to utilize exactly three cards from the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the best hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the very same approach in nearly every poker game.
The lower hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be made, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no low hand available, the high hand takes the entire pot.
It may seem complex initially, after a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to get the fundamental nuances of play easily enough. Seeing as you have people wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha/8 offers an exciting range of betting possibilities and seeing that you have several individuals battling for the high hand, as well as a few shooting for the low. If you enjoy a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
