Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complicated but popular poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant variation, has grown in acceptance so amazingly.
Omaha/8 starts like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to each player. A round of betting follows where gamblers can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. One more round of betting happens. After all the players have in turn called or folded, another card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering ensues at which point the river card is flipped. The players will need to make the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where a few entrants get confused. Unlike Holdem, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player has to utilize exactly three cards from the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same notion in nearly all poker games.
A low hand is more complex, but really free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the high hand takes the whole pot.
While it seems complex initially, following a couple of hands you will be able to get the base subtleties of the game with ease. Seeing as you have players betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are being used at once, Omaha/8 provides an amazing array of wagering possibilities and owing to the fact that you have numerous players battling for the high hand, and several shooting for the low hand. If you love a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha Hi-Lo.
