Omaha Hi/Lo: Basic Overview

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complex but well-loved poker games. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure variation, has expanded in popularity so quickly.

Omaha hi/lo starts like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to each player. A sequence of wagering follows where players can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are handed out, this is called the flop. A further round of wagering ensues. After all the players have in turn called or folded, an additional card is flipped on the turn. Another round of wagering ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The entrants must attempt to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where many players get confused. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must utilize precisely three cards from the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the identical concept in nearly every poker game.

The lower hand is more difficult, but really opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be made, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no low hand available, the higher hand wins the entire pot.

Although it seems complicated initially, after a few rounds you will be able to get the fundamental nuances of play with ease. Since you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better offers an exciting collection of betting possibilities and seeing that you have numerous individuals shooting for the high hand, and several battling for the low hand. If you love a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it is worth your time to participate in Omaha/8.
