Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complicated but favored poker variations. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure game, has expanded in popularity so quickly.
Omaha 8 or better starts exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to each player. A round of betting follows in which players can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are given out, this is known as the flop. One more sequence of wagering happens. After all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of betting follows and then the river card is revealed. The players must attempt to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where a few players get baffled. Unlike Hold’em, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must utilize exactly three cards from the board, and precisely two hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the best possible hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the identical concept in just about every poker game.
A lower hand is more complex, but really free’s up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand takes the complete pot.
It may seem complicated at first, following a few rounds you will be able to pick up on the base nuances of play easily enough. Seeing as you have people wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha hi/lo provides an overwhelming range of betting choices and seeing that you have several individuals battling for the high, and a few shooting for the low hand.
