Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complex but well-loved poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible variation, has increased in popularity so quickly.
Omaha Hi-Lo starts just like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to each player. A round of betting follows where players can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. One more round of betting ensues. After all the players have in turn called or dropped out, an additional card is revealed on the turn. Another sequence of betting happens and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers will have to make the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a few entrants can get baffled. Unlike Holdem, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player must utilize exactly 3 cards on the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the best hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the identical concept in almost every poker game.
The low hand is more complicated, but really opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the high hand wins the whole pot.
It may seem complex at the start, following a couple of hands you will be able to get the basic subtleties of the game with ease. Since you have individuals betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha/8 provides an overwhelming range of betting options and owing to the fact that you have several individuals shooting for the high, as well as many shooting for the low hand.
