Omaha Hi Lo: General Summary

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most difficult but popular poker games. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible variation, has grown in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha/8 begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to every player. A sequence of wagering follows where gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. Another sequence of betting ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of betting ensues and then the river card is flipped. The players must attempt to make the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where many entrants can get baffled. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to use precisely 3 cards on the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same approach in nearly all poker games.

The lower hand is more complex, but really opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the high hand wins the entire pot.

While it seems difficult at first, after a few rounds you will be able to pick up on the basic subtleties of the game easily enough. Seeing as you have people wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better offers an amazing assortment of betting possibilities and seeing that you have several players trying for the high hand, along with several trying for the low. If you like a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to play Omaha hi-low.
