Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complicated but popular poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible game, has increased in popularity so rapidly.
Omaha/8 starts just like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A sequence of wagering ensues in which players can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. A further sequence of betting ensues. After all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. Another round of wagering follows and then the river card is revealed. The players will need to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where a few players get confused. Contrasted to Hold’em, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must utilize exactly 3 cards from the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the best possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the identical approach in nearly every poker game.
The lower hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand takes the complete pot.
Although it seems complicated initially, following a couple of rounds you will be able to pick up on the base nuances of play with ease. Since you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better provides an overwhelming range of wagering possibilities and owing to the fact that you have numerous players battling for the high, and many trying for the low hand. If you prefer a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha/8.
